Should government regulate sports?

With yesterday’s big sports news — Mark McGwire (my childhood sports idol) admitting to steroid use — I’ll pose a question to the more well-read sports fans here: should government be regulating professional sports?  I mean, given that Major League Baseball has an anti-trust waiver from Congress, shouldn’t Congress do more to ensure that competition is fair?  Sam and others – chime in, please.

The question is really: what’s fair? The government should regulate anti-competitive practices by baseball–but only in a business sense. It should probably also protect players from illegal actions by owners, like the 80s collusion scandals.

But should it regulate drug use? Probably if those drugs are federally controlled (as many steroids are). It’s harder to try and figure out why the government should intervene in the use of legal enhancers.
