Democratic diversity

William Galston writes a piece in The New Republic on the Democrats’ ideological diversity.  The main point is that Congressmen’s differing views mirror those of the people that elected them.  This raises the issue of whether Congressmen are elected to fight for what they think is right, for what their consituents think is right, or some mix of the two.  It would be useful to explore the theoretical basis for each of these three categories.  I dicussed some of the issues here.

Maybe the congressman just happens to believe as his constituents and that’s why he was elected.
