Do rich people work harder?

Are people responsible for their willingness to work hard?

Nicholas Kristof’s recent piece explores why Asian Americans, Jews and West Indian blacks succeed disproportionally. He concludes:

These three groups may help debunk the myth of success as a simple product of intrinsic intellect, for they represent three different races and histories. In the debate over nature and nurture, they suggest the importance of improved nurture

And:

A common thread among these three groups may be an emphasis on diligence or education, perhaps linked in part to an immigrant drive.

This presents the same challenge for contemporary egalitarianism that I discussed in an earlier post.

While these groups are successful in the United States, they struggle in their home countries. Asian countries like Indonesia, Philippines and China are impoverished. Israel is welfare state that makes a mockery of democracy and was recently rated as one of the most corrupt countries on the planet.
