Souter to retire

Most news outlets are reporting today that Justice David Souter is planning to retire from the court as soon as a replacement has been chosen and confirmed.  The Supreme Court is the closest thing the United States has to systematic political philosophy, as one role for the court is to reconcile the basic principles of government outlined in the Constitution with prevailing beliefs and attitudes.
